In what may have been the fiercest fight of his career, Unified Champion and Russian favorite Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev engaged in a thrilling back-and-forth bout with the Haitian/Quebecois powerhouse Jean Pascal that ultimately ended with a stoppage for Kovalev in the 8th, keeping his three Light Heavyweight belts in his possession despite a valiant challenge from Pascal.

The fight appeared to be all but over toward the end of the third, when Kovalev connected a crisp, clean right hand that sent Pascal’s limp body tumbling through the ropes, but Pascal made the count and returned to his corner to regroup. Though he was clearly still recovering from such a huge knockdown, Pascal was able to regain a bit of control in the fourth and make some serious headway against Kovalev in the fifth and sixth. What started out looking like a sure thing for Kovalev was suddenly a thrilling bout with fast and hard damage being delivered by both fighters.

Ultimately, Kovalev gained the upper hand in the eighth round and unleashed a flurry of shots that again sent Pascal tumbling through the ropes, and after a pair of devastating right hooks to the head of Pascal, Referee Louis Pabon put a stop to the fight, declaring Kovalev victorious once again.

Pascal was visibly upset at the stoppage, eager to continue with the fight. “I was still in the fight. That was a tough fight for both of us, and I don’t know why the referee stopped the fight. I’m not happy,” Pascal vented after the bout. “I was in the fight from round one. We should do it again and have a rematch. He was throwing bombs, but this is the sport of boxing; you give some, you get some. I was there; I was watching.”

Kovalev was agreeable to the idea of a rematch, though, stating “I am ready for anyone.”
