In an unexpected upset, unbeaten Viktor "The Iceman" Postol defeated fan-favored Lucas Matthysse in the 10th round of the electrifying bout at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Despite Matthysse's fearsome punches, Postol's precision and skill landed him a final righ-handed knockout shot to his competitor's eye, winning him the vacant WBC World Super Lightweight Title.

Postol, a 31 year old native of Ukraine, kept his Argentine opponent at bay from the start, using his size to divert Matthysse's advances. Postol led the early rounds with strong jabs and quick feet, picking up the pace in the 3rd round. By the middle rounds however, Matthysse came back, landing solid body shots and forcing Postol back. Postol, a student of the great Freddie Roach, took back momentum in the later rounds, dodging blows from Matthysse and delivering a number of hard rights.

The fight culminated suddenly in the 10th round, where Matthysse's left hook was met by a counter right uppercut to the eye that sent him to his knees.

"I felt a pop in my eye," recalled Matthysse. "I preferred to take care of my eye. I could have gotten up but I preferred to stay down to protect my eye. Nothing happened for me tonight."

After the fight, Golden Boy executive Eric Gomez explained Matthysse's experience in more detail: "He was blind for about 10 to 20 seconds. It freaked him out, scared him."

"He's a really great opponent, really strong," Postol said after his victory. "I didn't want to knock him out. I didn't plan to do that. I just came into the fight and wanted to relax and box, and do what I do best. And the knockout came. It's all great."

In the co-main event, 27-year-old junior welterweight Antonio Orozco defeated the seasoned Humberto Soto. The action packed fight was a close call that ultimately went to Orozco in the 10th round.
