Two-Time World Champion and top-rated pound-for-pound fighter Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) returned to the ring on March 26, dominating his undefeated and number one rated IBF light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera (17-0, 12 KOs) at Oracle Arena. Barrera put up a solid effort, but not enough to stop his opponent’s quick jabs and solid left hook, which ultimately brought Ward the win in his hometown of Oakland, CA.

Returning to the ring after a prolonged absence due to injury, 32-year-old Andre Ward pleased the crowd with his in-ring artistry from the first round. Despite having moved up a weight class to take on Barrera, Ward made quick work of the challenge, using his sheer speed and skill against Barrera’s strength and dangerous force.

In the third round Ward landed the biggest punch of the night, delivering a powerful left hook to the top of Barrera’s head, knocking him down.

This didn’t stop them however, as the third through eighth rounds saw Ward eluding Barrera’s advances and continuing his assault with stinging jabs and left hooks.

The later rounds got more aggressive. In the eighth round Ward landed a powerful left hook to the body, dropping Barrera to the ground and leading referee Raul Caiz Sr. to deduct a point from Ward for hitting below the belt.

Barrera accidentally head butted Ward in the tenth round, which opened a cut over Ward’s left eye but didn’t stop him for long.

The bout ended after the 12th round with Ward delivering a final right hand on Barrera with a minute left in the fight.

Despite winning the fight by unanimous decision Ward was a bit hard on himself, rating his own performance as a “B-minus, because I told you I would’t use the layoff as an excuse on any level, but the reality is, the more you fight, the sharper you get…There were certain things I wanted to do that I didn’t do tonight.”
