12 Round WBA, IBF, WBO Light Heavyweight Championship Bout
Available in HD

HBO returned to Russia for the first time since 2013, where Unified Light Heavyweight World Champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (29-0-1, 26 KOs) defended his IBF, WBA, and WBO titles by defeating challenger Isaac "Golden Boy" Chilemba (24-3-2, 10 KOs) , in a unanimous decision victory on July 11, at the DIVS Palace of Sports in Ekaterinburg.

Despite the ultimate win for Kovalev, the early rounds saw Chilemba putting up a fierce performance, catching the defender with repeated hard jabs. Rounds 4, 5, and 6 were closer to call as Chilemba’s head-snapping jabs kept Kovalev’s advances at bay.

Kovalev turned up the heat in the seventh round, putting up a fierce attack against his challenger. The 33 year old charged at his challenger late in the round, delivering a hard jab and a powerful right to the jaw that sent Chilemba to the canvas. Chilemba beat the count however and was back on his feet to finish the round.

In the eighth round Kovalev nearly knocked Chilemba down a second time, but the challenger only staggered, received a few more blows, and eventually put Kovalev into a clinch to avoid being hit again. After the referee separated the fighters, Chilemba stayed on his feet the rest of the round.

The later rounds didn’t sway much in either direction, until the end of the twelfth round, Kovalev went into attack mode in the last minute of the bout. Kovalev gave his opponent everything he got at the end, even injuring Chilmba’s nose, but it wasn’t enough to knock him out.

By the end of the fight, Chilemba’s strong defense and evasive footwork didn’t win out over Kovalev’s powerhouse offensive performance, and the defender was awarded a unanimous decision win.
