12 Round WBA, IBF, WBO Light Heavyweight Championship Bout
Available in HD

In a hugely one-sided showing at Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA, hometown champ and 2004 Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward methodically worked opponent Alexander Brand into submission over the course of 12 rounds, handily winning a shutout victory and barely breaking a sweat in the process.

In his second fight since moving up to the Light Heavyweight division, Ward looked to be merely tolerating Brand for much of the bout, dealing quick thudding jabs against an opponent who could do little more than retreat. In an exciting and effective choice, Ward switched over from Orthodox to Southpaw stance midway through the 5th, trading hard left hooks for punishing right hands to the body and disorienting his opponent in the process. A small cut opened over Brandís eye in the 7th, but his resilience and notoriously strong chin kept him going and he somehow managed to withstand the full 12 rounds against his obviously-dominant competitor.

The judges took note of Wardís dominance throughout and scored the bout unanimously 120-108 for the heavily favored fighter.

"We knew this guy was going to be really, really hard to knock out. He's a veteran," Ward stated of his opponent. †"People got to realize that when a guy with experience doesn't want to get knocked out, it's hard, and he's throwing punches from crazy angles and has got nothing to lose. So I tried to press it. Didn't get it. But it's good to get the rounds."
