In a long awaited battle royale, Andre Ward (31, 0-0, 15 KOs) scored a razor-close and controversial unanimous decision over his Light Heavyweight rival Sergey Kovalev ( 30-0-2, 26 KOs) in one of the biggest fights of the year.

Arriving at the arena cutting an imposing figure, Kovalev came into the fight strong, repeatedly answering Ward?s bodywork with his powerful jab. In the second round, with a small trickle of blood already dripping from his nose, Ward absorbed a cracking straight right to the head which sent him straight to the canvas for only the second time in his career. Ward finished the round, determined not to panic and instead continue fighting, and was ultimately forced to adjust his approach, working to incorporate his power left hook to try and regain what ground he had lost to the knockdown.

In the second half of the fight, Kovalev began to visibly tire and grow frustrated with Ward?s repeated clinching. Kovalev continued to throw his signature weight and power behind his punches, but his composure began to wane. Ward, however, was unrelenting and kept his energy and speed high across the rounds. He brought stiff jabs and intense body shots, which ultimately earned him the unanimous-decision win, scored 114-113.

Despite the closeness throughout the fight, Ward was confident in the result. ?I was not surprised when I heard the decision?.I know it was a close fight. The crowd, you can hear they thought I won.?

Kovalev felt very differently as he was quoted as saying, ?It?s the wrong decision. I don?t want to say my opinion. The witnesses are here. They saw it. It?s my job. It was a fight of my life. I am disappointed in the judge?s decision.?
