Unified Light Heavyweight Champion of the World ANDRE "SOG" WARD (32-0-0, 16 KOs) defended his WBA, IBF and WBO titles in the highly-anticipated rematch against former title holder SERGEY "KRUSHER" KOVALEV (30-2-1, 26 KOs) on June 17 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV.

The first three rounds proved to be pretty much a dead heat, providing some solid back-and-forth, though in round three Ward landed a low blow, which earned him a warning from the referee. Kovalev looked strong in these early rounds and was able to hang with his opponent.

Rounds four and five saw Ward inflict some definitive hits including an emphatic hook and uppercut in the fourth. However, Kovalev stood his ground and rallied in the sixth with some impressive hits of his own.

Despite the resurgence, Kovalev appeared fatigued in the seventh, unable to stave off Ward?s attacks and received a powerful left hook.

In the eighth, Ward really unleashed and landed hit after hit, eventually getting Kovalev on the ropes, allowing Ward to unload with a fury of uppercuts that prompted a stop to the fight.

There was a bit of controversy surrounding the hits that ultimately lead to Ward's technical knockout of opponent Kovalev. After sustaining some questionably low blows, Kovalev was doubled over, which triggered the stoppage from the ref.

"I cannot explain what happened"? Kovalev said in the ring afterward. "Yes, sure I could have continued. This is a fight. I could continue the fight. He didn't hurt me, except with the low blows."

Ward responded and addressed the accusations.

"We can't talk about the low blows without talking about the rabbit punches [that Kovalev landed]," Ward said. "If the fight had gone one more round, it would have been ugly. He was hurt to the body and the head. We earned this victory tonight; we earned it."
