Eleider "Storm" Alvarez (24-0-0, 12 KOs) successfully won the World Light Heavyweight Title when he confidently defeated his defender Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev (32-3-1, 28 KOs), claiming a technical knockout victory in the seventh round bout on August 4, held at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

From the start Kovalev came out fast, landing jabs to Alvarez's body. Alvarez tried to put up a defense but was disrupted when Kovalev came back at him with more jabs to the body. Leaving them both into a clinch with Alvarez tapping the back of Kovalev's head. By round two, Alvarez found contact and landed a nice left hook to the body in a short combination. Alvarez tied up Kovalev and tackled him on top of the ropes.

In the third, Kovalev led with hooks to the body and head, but Alvarez threw a surprise jab that snapped back Kovalev's head. Alvarez continued to look for another opportunity to pounce and had some success sneaking in shots off of his opponent's forward momentum. Kovalev unleashed a flurry of punches that left Alvarez shocked, as he continued to knock hard shots, he landed a right hand at the bell ending of the fourth. By the fifth, Alvarez attempted multiple jabs to the body, but was blindsided when Kovalev hit a hard right hand.

By the sixth, both fighters exchanged jabs back and forth, until a head clash caused Alvarez to bleed under his left eye. Both fighters took jabs at one another, but none were successful, until Alvarez landed a razor-sharp shot that floored Kovalev. But Kovalev beat the count, once he landed on his feet an exchange began, until one overhand right from Alvarez put down Kovalev, the referee declared TKO and put an end to this battle.

The stats from the fight also showed a clear winner, where Alavarez landed 29% of his total punches and Kovalev landed 27%.

"As the fight went on, I wanted to show that I could stay strong and do good things," Alvarez said.
